Founder & Principal of Pathwork Coaching & Consulting

Terri was using 'coaching' skills long before the term became vogue. For years, she has been described as "bringing out the best in others" by focusing on the individual's or team's natural gifts and abilities. Through an integral approach, Terri works systemically with leaders, professionals, individuals, and teams. Terri's style of developmental coaching is strategic and integrative, and focuses on facilitating "insight moments," enhancing emotional competencies, and working more effectively with team members. Terri is able to look at the topic the individual or the team presents from a systemic perspective and brings customized solutions to her clients.

Coaching Philosophy and Approach

Coaching is a values-based, working alliance between the coach and the client and is conducted in the context of relationship. Clients come to coaching for a wide range of reasons. Sometimes, they're faced with a problem or new challenge, sometimes they need to accelerate an area of learning, and sometimes they're looking to increase their overall effectiveness. Whatever the reason that brings the client to executive coaching, at its best, coaching is a process of co-discovery and learning. Through the use of well-timed and well-phrased questions and identifying distinctions and insights, meaningful learning experiences occur resulting in behavior change that is sustainable and self-generative.

The values package from which I operate:

  • Respect is the foundation
  • Trust is the container of safety and confidentiality
  • Empathy is the value that helps me to orient to the client's world
  • Self-responsibility is the value of empowerment and continuous learning that I hold for the client
  • Outcome focused is a bias towards action and results

My approach to working with clients is straightforward. We begin by setting the goals and objectives for the coaching engagement, putting the client in the driver's seat to design and commit to a better future. We then move into an assessment period (from which I'm able to draw on a wide range of tools and methodologies). This period of information gathering helps me, as the coach, to understand the stories the client holds about their leadership and their world. Once the coaching dialogue begins, we move into action right away.

The coaching dialogue allows us to work together on the multiple levels of what it means to be a human being and how adults learn and grow: the cognitive, emotional, and somatic levels. Together we (the client and the coach) develop a time-bound plan that begins to build new "muscle memories" and takes the journey of exploring resistance, blocks and misgivings to change. We work on overcoming reluctance, uncovering unused opportunities, seeing new possibilities, and tapping into the client's resilience.

Throughout the coaching engagement, we are building a scaffolding of support for the client. As the action arrow begins to point towards the conclusion of the coaching engagement, we're looking at the support structures in the client's life that exist or need to be put into place to sustain the new behaviors.

A Lifetime of Preparation

The emerging coaching field has allowed Terri to fine tune what she was already doing under a different job description. Her 25-year career as a corporate leader of Learning and Organizational Development allowed her to learn from the ground up how to design, deliver and implement a wide variety of organizational programs including change initiatives, increasing organizational capability, competency models, team interventions, and customized training programs including "training-the-trainer" programs.

Terri designed and implemented an integrated virtual training environment while at Morgan Stanley, and an Executive Coaching program for AstraZeneca. The last five years as a Director of Leadership & Organizational Effectiveness have allowed her to work with her internal clients in more diverse and solution-focused ways.
